The Opioid Crisis Response Act of 2018 was recently signed by the president. It provides significant improvements to the treatment of opioid addiction. There are also provisions for improving law enforcement efforts and reducing prescriptions for opioids.
Most importantly, funding for addiction treatment will be addressed. Billions of dollars will be available for grants to improve access to treatment. Medication Assisted Treatment is one of the primary concerns. Programs that provide MAT will be able to apply for grants. Telemedicine is also addressed, as is the involvement of Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants.
While we may not see any major changes in the very near future, expect to see things change as we go into 2019. We should expect to see the tides turning in the war on opioid addiction. Finally, we are going to have success and save many lives.
